I downloaded this from Phil's site so I'd have some software that would let me both make copies of my games and burn physical CDs of some GOG games but after successfully installing the program will not launch, saying that it requires a newer version of Windows...
If the file you got from Phil is alcohol120_fe_2.0.3.9811.exe, it's for later Windows versions. The last 98SE compatible version is 1.9.5.3105, and I think it's 30-day shareware only, as their ad-sponsored "Free Edition" started later. The full license they sell now is still good for the old version, although a bit costly.
appreciate the heads-up. is the "retro edition" ad-based? does the alcohol virtual drive support CD audio? also i take it win95 is out of consideration, probably too high overhead for typical hardware there anyway...
anyone ever tried to share an alcohol drive over network via iSCSI? that way you don't even have to run alcohol on the old PC, and no HDD seek times either if the image is on an SSD. though iSCSI apparently does require at least 2000 SP4.

This is not spyware but admittedly it is sneaky and looks like it might be spyware unless you're willing to check it out carefully. Installation does REQUIRE you to install Alcohol Toolbar. This is an IE add-in licensed from Candeo which adds a search toolbar to IE (works with both 6 and 7) consisting of two DLLs which can both be disabled in IE's "Manage Add-Ins" option. Disabling the toolbar will not prevent Alcohol 52% from running. There is also a Start Menu shortcut which is provided for uninstalling the Alcohol Toolbar, and you can immediately uninstall it after installation. Again, Alcohol 52% will continue to work after the Toolbar is uninstalled. I did not test the toolbar for very long, but it does not appear to "phone home" except when you actually type a search into the box or if you allow it to check for updates automatically. According to its posted privacy policy, it never serves pop-up nor pop-under ads. Of course, it does provide sponsored search results, so obviously Alcohol is subsidizing this by trying to steal some search revenue from Google.As you can tell from the previous reviewer, spyware practices have made some people so frustrated that they will have zero tolerance for anything which vaguely resembles spyware at all, and I doubt many people will have the patience I did, to check Alcohol's claims with Filemon and Regmon inside VMware. I like this program but it probably won't find a huge following until it makes the toolbar optional during install.

use full when blindwright can't make a back up copy work 100% seems both programs work a like in some ways, when one don't work great for the disk copys there is choice between the two programs for getting a perfect copy, just one lacks features than the other.given time i belive that other features may be added, to copy disks can be long and boring process with such hard protection' but same for most copy programs there seems no 3 min quick ripp unless you only copy 700mb disks, expect 20 mins or so for dvd backup with protection, depends what protecton on a disk there is, other program you could use with such same features is Fantom, in all does it job well but 30 days is not very long 120 days trial for most software would be way better, buy the time you blink the 30 days is over....

authors putting more effort in anti-piracy protection than in making their software better. indeed it has some nice features, but i can't rate higher than "2". a burning program should not mess up the OS it's running on (well, this especially seems to apply to certain chipset / driver combinations). that dinosaur cdrwin never let me down, no matter how messed up the system was. alcohol itself is unstable, i'm sorry to say that. 2ff7e9595c
